| Statement My paintings enact a game of seduction, where a viewer is first attracted by the overall prettiness, then repulsed upon closer inspection by miniature scenes of erotic and military turmoil, and ultimately won over by these minute passages. For subject matter I source imagery of the Appalachian South and the Middle East—-both regions associated with my family history. When painting, I perform the role of “cultural dissident”, or antagonist to the art-making tradition, part disenfranchised Southerner, part Lebanese factionalist. This persona offers a vantage point from which to critique American foreign policy and the caprices of the cultural elite. |
